How To Use Lightning Headphones On Laptop

What are lightning headphones?

Lightning headphones come with a port connector technology that was invented by Apple for its use in iPhone and iPad products. The connector is shorter and more compact than the 30-pin iPod connector. It is also more durable and reversible, i.e., you can connect your devices or lightning headphones on laptop by this way.

Lightning connectors can transfer data to a computer and charge your iPhone and iPad, but its specification also allows audio (such as music) to be carried over it. This is where lightning headphones come in. These headphones have a lightning connector at the end, instead of a regular old  1/8th inch headphone jack. This makes it much easier to connect it with the iPhone.

Why is it difficult to use lightning headphones on laptops?

Lightning connectors have many advantages over the traditional 1/8-inch headphone jack. However, the introduction of this new lightning connector has posed a dilemma.

First, all the new iPhone models no longer come with a traditional 3.5 mm female audio jack. This means that all the electronic accessories that were designed for older models are now entirely incompatible with the newer iPhone models. So, the users with the older model have to use a lightning adapter.

This unique adapter has one end compatible with the lightning connector of Apple devices and the other compatible with the standard 3.5 mm audio plugs. It converts the digital audio output of the iPhone into an analog signal which is delivered to the headphones that connected to the port.

The second problem is that these lightning headphones can not be used directly with any other device except iPhones starting with iPhone 5,  iPads of 4th generation and iPod Touch of 5th, 6th and 7th generations.

How to use lightning headphones on laptop?

There are ways to use lightning headphones with a laptop. The first way is through the USB port of the computer, while the other way is through the dedicated 3.5 mm audio jack port on the computer. Depending on this, the adapters can be of two types:

  • Adapters with one of the ends compatible with a lightning headphone plug and the other end compatible with a 3.5 mm male audio jack. You can attach the lightning headphones to the adapter and connect its other side to the audio jack of your laptop.
  • Adapters with one end compatible with the lightning headphone plug while the other end can be connected to a dedicated USB port of the laptop. These adapters are called lightning (female) to USB adapters.

Anker has launched a USB-C to the lightning audio adapter, which allows iPhone and iPad owners to use their lightning headphones with any device having a USB-C port.

The adapter is MFi-certified by Apple and can connect lightning headphones to other devices such as Macs, iPad Pros, and even Windows 10 PCs. This includes a full mic and remote support. However, Macs may require a one-time setup in which the adapter is selected for output and input.

There is a common complaint with many Apple products that you canโ€™t use your apple products with products of any other brand. In this case, the lightning headphones could not even be used with older versions of iPhones โ€“ which are Apple products themselves.

While the lightning cable was introduced in 2012, the Anker USB-C to lightning audio adapter was launched only in 2019. This means that users were facing this problem for years before a solution was introduced. It is no secret that Apple creates a high level of brand loyalty among its users. But it can also create issues.
