Video editing is widely classified; almost of the video editing types are majorly used in films, television shows, video advertisements, video essays, YouTube videos etc. It is one of the essential jobs in the film industry, and the quality of video editing can make or break a film, so it essential to learn video editing.

As a beginner in video editing, there are certain things that you absolutely must know

Beginner Video editing tips

2) Learn video editing basics

There are some basic techniques that every novice should know

  • Trimming footage or adding parts from another frame or video.
  • Rearranging clips in the timeline.
  • Removing, adding and editing audio.
  • Adding transitions.

4) Export your completed video

Once you have finished editing, choose a video format and select an image to represent your video. Transfer it to your computer or any other device of your choice. You can then publish your video on any platform.

This was about the technical part. However, you’re going to have to get more creative if you want to catch and hold the viewers’ attention

How to make high quality videos

1) Script

Regardless of the type of video that you want to create, always be sure about the script and the content. Even if it is a simple 2-minute video, think about what kind of content you want to present, what you want the presenter/character to say and basically how you want to present your content.

2) High-quality images

High-quality images are essential if you want your video to stand out. There is software available that can help make your pictures a specific size or resolution.

3) Pay attention to the sounds

Audio editing is an essential part of video editing. Whether it is adding a voice over, music or select sound effects, knowing how to work with audio will take you a long way.

4) Choosing the right color combination

The color scheme that you choose for your video will directly affect the viewers’ moods. There are two main color systems that you will come across:

  • RGB: Used for all electronic displays – It is how you see colors on your electronic devices, i.e., tablets, phones and TV. The primary colors used are green, red and blue.
  • HEX: Hex codes are six-digit numbers used to represent RGB colors for screen displays.

5) Marketing the video

Marketing a video means making sure that the video is seen by as many people as possible. You can embed the video in emails, add the video to your landing page, share it on social media or run video ads.

That depends on how much you want to learn. Let’s say you just want to focus on the editing (technical part) and not the creative part that I mentioned above. If you devote an hour or two every day to learning all the technical skills and tools (assuming you are an absolute beginner), it should take about 2-3 weeks at most to gain that knowledge.

However, this doesn’t mean that you will achieve mastery in the technical part. It will merely mean that you are not a novice anymore and know your way around the software and the techniques.

If, however, you want to expand your knowledge in the technical as well as the creative part, then it can take anywhere from around 6 months to several years. Because that will be like asking how long it takes to learn painting. It comes with experience as creativity takes time to develop. So if you want to be able to make a living out of it, it will take time and patience on your part.

So, the bottom line is, the more time you devote, the more expertise you will gain. If you are looking to learn video editing, then the best thing would be to, just, get started. Experiment and see which software you are most comfortable with. Then start exploring that software and then build on your knowledge.
